Shannon's Communication Theory

In the late 1940s Claude Shannon at Bell Labs invented Information Theory. It was of interest to Bell Labs because it provided a way of determining the necessary carrying capacity of communication lines. When Shannon investigated ordinary language he found that it is 50% redundant; it uses that percentage of sounds or letters that are not strictly necessary to carry meaning.
