W hile others had noticed similarities among Sanskrit and various European languages, it took Jones — who made systematic comparisons of vocabulary and grammar, and who understood that languages evolve in an orderly fashion — to supply compelling evidence of the Indo-European language family and its extinct ancestor. His comparative approach became one of the key tools of subsequent linguistic analysis.
