High in a tower of the Waterhouse Building is the pollen lab, accessible only by a steep, narrow, twisting staircase. The lab houses 13,000 specimens of pollen, as well as four or five duplicates of each. These duplicates are made to be traded with other institutions, to acquire yet more specimens—something like collecting baseball cards.
