The 2003
Cold Spring Harbor meeting was organized to celebrate the discovery
of the structure of DNA, published in the journal
Nature
fifty years ago. The two scientists behind the breakthrough
were James Watson (right) and Francis Crick (left). This picture
of the two scientists is hanging in the bar at Cold Spring Harbor,
the site of many of the liveliest discussions during the meeting.
The bar is not only a place to socialize and enjoy a cold beer
at the end of a long day, but a place where scientists can float
their research ideas and preliminary results like trial balloons
to see whether they'll fly.
