Looking at the earliest gesture of the construction process,
In Between
examines the activity of site preparation, where surface topography is adjusted prior to the arrival of the first building materials. By introducing this temporal condition into the museum setting, the artists wish to dwell on the moment of uncertainty, anticipation, and infinite potential that is a significant emotional component of every architectural and cultural transition. Also present in the work is a nylon archeology grid overlaid atop the entire landscape, a bent line of fluorescent lighting, and a suggestion of built form rendered in white welded wire. The entire assembly becomes a confounding museum diorama, describing the peculiar state of uncertainty in between the formation of an idea and its completion.

Annie Han
and
Daniel Mihalyo
founded Lead Pencil Studio in 1997 for collaborative projects in architecture and installation art. Drawing equally from architecture and the studio arts, their work is an exploration of the history and memory of occupied sites and spatial gestures at the architectural scale. In 2006, Lead Pencil Studio was selected as an Emerging Voice by the Architectural League of New York and received an Artist Trust Fellowship from the city of Seattle, a Genius Award from the Seattle weekly
the Stranger
, and a residency from the Headlands Center for the Arts.
