Las Cuevas (translation: “the caves”) is
so named because of the nearby cave system, probably
the largest in the Western Hemisphere. These miles of
passages beneath the limestone plateau extend all the
way to Guatemala (about 16 km/10 miles away), and are
home to several species of
bats
and an untold collection of other organisms.
